I refer to “Khaw aims for rail network reliability to match that of HK’s” (Oct 10).

My family and I visit Hong Kong yearly and we frequently use the MTR for our journeys. We often stay in Mong Kok, which has been dubbed as the “busiest place on Earth” by ABC News and “the world’s most crowded place” by Reuters news agency.

With an average of 130,000 people packed inside each sq km in Mong Kok, the number of passengers that pass through that MTR station far surpasses Singapore’s most crowded MRT station.

Nevertheless, the trains in that MTR station arrive and depart like clockwork and big crowds congregating at the platforms are cleared quickly, which means there are no snaking queues like those we see on our MRT platforms.

The train speed in Hong Kong is also faster. We also did not experience any jerking and stopping of the MTR trains on the tracks like what we experience on our MRT trains.

If Hong Kong can have an efficient transport network, I believe Singapore can have one too.

There is much Singapore can learn from Hong Kong.
