S’pore national football team needs a local coach

With Bernd Stange vacating the job of national football coach, I ask that the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) steer clear of appointing another foreigner to Singapore football’s top post.

With Bernd Stange vacating the job of national football coach, I ask that the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) steer clear of appointing another foreigner to Singapore football’s top post.

After all, we have foreigners in the coaching stable, such as technical director Michel Sablon, and we have two local football icons in V Sundramoorthy and Fandi Ahmad (“Sundram ready for Lions role”; April 12).

Let us not only shortlist and consider them but actually appoint them, preferably both, perhaps as national coach and national team manager, to ensure Singapore’s success in international football.

Singapore football needs a local head coach, as was the case during its heyday with Uncle Choo Seng Quee in charge and N Ganesan as the team manager and FAS president concurrently.

Until now, no foreigner has bettered what our two passionate, committed Singaporeans did to take Singapore football to the dazzling heights I remember with fondness and pride.
