As a consumer, I was shocked to read this week on http://www.reach.gov.sg that Singapore wasted 796,000 tonnes of food last year.

We are so fortunate that we fill our stomachs without worrying about what will happen to our food stockpile.

Culprits of food wastage also include supermarkets, fast-food chains and restaurants.

For example, if a supermarket has a lot of vegetables and fruits that have not been bought, where would they end up? At least some end up in the rubbish bin.

To me, the biggest responsibility here lies with supervisors ordering the food. Are all supervisors taught to be responsible by ordering only what consumers need, to help prevent excessive wastage?

It would be good to know the corporate responsibility practices our supermarkets have.

Indeed, if we are not creating a culture and habit of treasuring food, treating Singapore as a dumping ground instead, we will become less fortunate soon enough in our food security.
