S’poreans must play their part to ensure lifts are not abused

The nationwide checks on lifts, with a view to ensuring reliability of use, is an exercise that is overdue (“BCA to intensify checks on lifts ahead of stiffer regulations”; March 12).

Ensuring their safety and performance is of great importance, and priority should be given to attending to lifts with telltale signs such as jerky rides or erratic operations, known best to those who use the lift in the block.

There should be a hotline for residents to supply such feedback to the relevant authorities.

However, Singaporeans must also play their part.

I have heard of people washing the corridor and unwittingly letting water flow into the lift shaft, or parents letting children play with the buttons in the lift.

Cameras in the lifts might throw more light on other kinds of abuse lifts are subjected to by users.
