S’pore’s vision needs to change, but meaning of Pledge does not
I would like to respond to the commentary “What the Pledge should mean today” (Sept 2). The Singapore Pledge is, to me, a mission in itself and its meaning should remain unchanged.

It is Singapore’s vision that needs to be revised and improved over time because the many different challenges that we now face are different from those faced when the Republic gained its independence in 1965.
Singapore has come a long way in the short span of about 50 years. The Pledge has been and will always be important and relevant to us as a nation, no matter the times.
It is the goals and vision of the Pledge and the hard work of Singaporeans and their leaders that have made this nation what it is today. And it is these factors that will determine who we are in the future.
Mission is timeless, while vision changes and improves over time, along with what has evolved around the world.
