S’pore’s youth can learn from work ethic of foreign workers

Recently, I made time to talk to foreign workers who were cementing new parking lots as well as some others who were resurfacing a pavement for use as a cycle track. They were Bangladeshis, and we exchanged greetings, even names.

Recently, I made time to talk to foreign workers who were cementing new parking lots as well as some others who were resurfacing a pavement for use as a cycle track. They were Bangladeshis, and we exchanged greetings, even names.

Those resurfacing the pavement were with their senior project manager. I could tell they liked and appreciated him as a friendly superior. He told me he enjoyed working with them too.

It was a hot day, but they said it was better to work here than to have no income in their country. They were thankful for the opportunity to prove their discipline and capability at work.

They said they loved Singapore for its order, and working long hours did not bother them.

They were united in their views on Singapore, and have bonded with one another to make their temporary life here something to remember when they return home.

After this moment with them, I arranged for one worker to buy dinner for all of them, on my account. Photographs were taken, and these showed that when it was time to work, the workers were focused.

I love their attitude. Young Singaporeans can learn from them about giving one’s best when performing a task or pursuing a career.

I salute and thank these workers, who play an integral role in our construction industry.
