We thank Mr Phillip Tan for his feedback in “‘Light-ups’ at Orchard Road a disgrace” (Dec 18, online).

All decorations related to the annual Christmas lights along Orchard Road adhere to fire safety regulations. They are certified by professional engineers and approved by the relevant government agencies. Public safety remains a top priority.

The Orchard Road Business Association has consulted the Singapore Civil Defence Force on the matter and has taken steps to implement its recommendations to prevent such incidents from recurring.

The frequency of light inspection has been increased. A first-responder team — fully equipped with firefighting skills and equipment — has been engaged and is stationed on Orchard Road at all times during the light-up period.

The association has also reminded the Orchard Road stakeholders’ respective fire safety managers to be more vigilant to fire occurrences in their vicinity and to ensure the safety of decorative lights put up outside their respective malls.

We hope that visitors to Orchard Road continue to enjoy the Christmas decorations during this festive season and wish readers a Happy New Year.
