Stricter worksite safety training, audits required

Higher fines are finally being imposed for worksite safety breaches. But when a mishap occurs, would fines really help workers? (“Court raises construction firm’s fine over death of employees”; Dec 16)

Maybe the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) needs to look into issues such as training: Does it meet international standards? Are international audits of these firms done?

For example, the independent international body Industrial Rope Access Trade Association’s training and audits are recognised and embraced worldwide. The MOM should consider engaging the best.

Maybe it should also think outside the box and see whether its existing processes are adequate. Prevention is better than cure, as lives are at stake.
