Suu Kyi must step up amid Rohingya crisis

It is painful and frustrating to read about the struggles the Rohingya are going through (Aid agency warns of mass deaths as Rohingya crisis deepens; Sept 18).

Why has Myanmar not recognised this as its problem? Why does it not regard the ethnic group as one of its peoples, despite them living there for centuries?

It is up to Ms Aung San Suu Kyi and her party in government to recognise them and allow them to return.

I hope that she has the courage to persuade the military establishment and the Buddhist majority to accept the Rohingya. By doing so, she would prove herself a genuine Nobel laureate, and Myanmar to be a peace-loving nation.
