Technology can help pharmacists advise the aged

The elderly often face mobility issues and may not live near a clinic or pharmacy. This may result in them not seeking medical attention for chronic ailments, such as osteoporosis or diabetes.

Also, if they have had medical appointments, they might have received different medicines with different medication schedules and unknown pharmaceutical interactions.

The use of technology, such as smartphones or computers, allows them or their more tech-savvy children and grandchildren to ask healthcare professionals about medical issues.

With telemedicine, the elderly can be given a diagnosis based on the symptoms they declare from the comfort of their home, as long as no physical examinations are called for.

Similarly, patients burdened with many medications could consult a pharmacist via the Internet about how to use the drugs. Such consultations can help patients who are reluctant to use Western pharmaceuticals, as opposed to Traditional Chinese Medicine and herbal remedies.

Pharmacists can advise them how to use both so that no unwanted side-effects result. Pharmacists now offer free consultations at community and hospital pharmacies, which tie in neatly with how telepharmacy operates.
