That is why, in approving the mobile operators’ request to close their 2G networks, the Infocomm Development Authority required them to put in place measures to help subscribers, including seniors, to transition smoothly onto the 3G networks from now until April 2017.
The operators have agreed to let 2G subscribers continue their existing subscription plans at no additional cost after April 1, 2017, and to offer low-cost 3G handsets to those who need to upgrade. These handsets and plans are available to users of 2G services today, including seniors and foreign workers.
We also have courses under the Digital Inclusion Silver Infocomm programme to help seniors through this transition. These courses, which include promoting awareness among seniors and teaching them how to use smartphones, are conducted at convenient locations around Singapore such as self-help group centres, voluntary welfare organisations and community centres.
At the Silver IT Fest in October, seniors and their families can also learn more about smartphone technology, among other new developments and applications.
The IDA will monitor the transition closely to minimise any inconvenience to users.
