I am glad that the Building and Construction Authority’s (BCA) recommendations for lift safety include a telephone or other communication devices installed in lifts for people to call for emergency services (“Internal phones among updates lifts need, says BCA”; Sept 17).

This allays my concern over the reliability and efficiency of the tele-monitoring system in public housing lifts.

The Infocomm Development Authority and the Housing Development Board (HDB) gave the assurance that the system immediately notified the Essential Maintenance Services Unit and the town council in the event of an emergency.

In several incidents of lifts stalling and mishaps, however, there were delays in rescue operations. In Ang Mo Kio Street 31, a domestic helper was trapped for 90 minutes.

I requested the BCA to include the system as an integral part of its audit and investigation (“Tele-monitoring system of lifts needs to be reviewed”; March 14).

Now, I hope HDB lifts will be equipped with a reliable communication system or devices to replace the tele-monitoring system.
