We refer to the letter, “UOB ceases interest-free instalment plan at pet stores” (Aug 14).

On behalf of the Council of Animal Welfare Leaders, numerous animal lovers and concerned citizens without pets, who suffer the effects of irresponsible pet purchases, we thank UOB for the admirable decision to cease its instalment plans for buying pets.

We appreciate the consideration of and honourable response to our opposition to the instalment-plan coupon for puppy purchase permitted by the National Day Parade organising committee. It demonstrates UOB’s commitment to society.

In animal welfare, as it is in health care, greater attention must be paid to preventive care.

If Singapore continues to only work on expensive interventions after permitting careless purchases of animals, we will never be rid of the shameful social issues of abuse, abandonment, animal nuisance through human ignorance and the burgeoning problem of strays.

These matters have been due to the permissive, irresponsible nature of transacting in animal lives. UOB’s magnanimous move towards corporate social responsibility in a humble way is to be lauded in the banking and commercial sector. We are touched.

We urge Singaporeans to note UOB’s exemplary stand in the journey towards responsible community harmony and animal welfare here.
