Three things MPs can do better in the House

I followed the recent parliamentary debates on the government budget with enthusiasm. I noticed, however, that Members of Parliament were reading almost word for word from prepared speeches without much expression of enthusiasm.

I followed the recent parliamentary debates on the government budget with enthusiasm. I noticed, however, that Members of Parliament were reading almost word for word from prepared speeches without much expression of enthusiasm.

This is boring and does not reflect well on their public speaking ability. MPs should attempt to rely less on prepared scripts, or use prompt cards if necessary, like what we observe in school and university debates.

I also observed poor attendance, which reflected MPs’ interest in the debates. It seems to me that MPs may be comfortable with meeting a minimum expected attendance or can justify their absence.

My third observation is of the attire of male MPs: An open-necked shirt looks too casual. MPs should dress formally, in keeping with the dignity of Parliament.
