Time to give more support for sport

I am glad and proud of Joseph Schooling and Team Singapore’s commitment to the country and sports in Singapore. There must now be more support for sport from the Government, the national sports associations, parents and students.

I am glad and proud of Joseph Schooling and Team Singapore’s commitment to the country and sports in Singapore. There must now be more support for sport from the Government, the national sports associations, parents and students.

Joseph’s gold medal success is a historic, magnificent moment. I hope that more Singaporeans will be motivated by a passion for sport so as to represent the nation in future, including in the Olympics.

Singapore should also concentrate on supporting locally born citizens rather than providing foreign-born athletes with citizenship to represent us. I am sure there will be more Joseph Schoolings who can and will win medals in future.

That said, I thank all foreign-born citizens of Team Singapore who have contributed to Singapore in sports and who have won us some medals.

I congratulate and thank Joseph and all of Team Singapore for our first gold medal and for their efforts, dedication and sacrifices.
