Towards a better S’pore for all, including LGBT people

I was saddened by Mr Bryan Lim’s comments and violent thoughts, referred to in the letter “Emotive language in LGBT debate does not mean support for violence” (June 22), towards the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

I was saddened by Mr Bryan Lim’s comments and violent thoughts, referred to in the letter “Emotive language in LGBT debate does not mean support for violence” (June 22), towards the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

Our Government’s stand is that Singapore accepts the LGBT community. I see a ton of discrimination, however, against this group in comments and articles posted by people.

Some are extreme, which is worrying, as many young people use social media and are exposed to these threats of violence.

On the BeProud SG Facebook page, individuals have shared their stories about being an LGBT individual here. It is hellish for most of them — real people — who are hiding and living in fear.

Emotive language may not mean support for violence, especially in the LGBT debate, but this does not mean the LGBT community is playing the victim card either. Love is love, and our society needs more of it.

By educating individuals, we will be able to see change and a little more love, which we have seen in recent years.

Having said that, certain religious groups and members of the We Are Against Pink Dot label LGBT love as lust.

The Prime Minister has said the LGBT community here will not be discriminated against, so let us work towards fulfilling this (“Conservative S’pore ‘not ready for same-sex marriage’”; June 6, 2015).

Let us spread love, not hate, and the Singapore of tomorrow will be better for all.
