For working adults and students who rely heavily on the public transport system, the option of applying for monthly concession passes would have crossed their minds at some point.
Heavy users who have to travel long distances on a daily basis would find the monthly concession pass helpful in cutting their transportation expenses. On the other hand, there are also commuters who deem it “useless”.
The Adult Monthly Travel Card allows one to enjoy unlimited rides on both public buses and trains for a month, but at S$120, it is not an economical option for most. With fares to come down from Dec 30 this year, the demand for the monthly concession passes will decrease further.
Some feel that this concession scheme should be scrapped, but we should consider that fares will continue to fluctuate based on future economic factors, as well as operating costs. Although it does not seem impactful at present, it has its place and should stay.
