Transport Minister should push for more motorcycle use
In trying to strike a balance between car ownership and public transport to keep traffic smooth, the Government seems to have overlooked the humble motorcycle (“Govt will seek to balance car-owning aspirations”; Aug 14).

The motorcycle can move easily on our roads, and some people — usually those in service industries such as security, cleaning and maintenance, and also workers such as despatch boys or couriers — need more freedom of movement than public transport can give.
Others also like the convenience of mobility, and motorcycles could provide them with an intermediate choice between cars and public transport. A casual observation of Singapore traffic would show that many cars carry only one person.
But Certificate of Entitlement premiums are elevated, and there is a dearth of parking spaces for motorcycles in the central business district and other commercial centres. Some buildings prohibit motorcycles in their car parks. Motorcyclists are marginalised.
The Transport Minister should keep motorcycles in mind as a means of transport for Singaporeans.
