Trees are planted because of paper use

I refer to the letter “Why do schools use so much paper in digital age?” (March 14).

Paper is environmentally safe and degradable. In fact, most paper companies grow trees; if the land is not used for this, it could be cleared for other economic purposes.

The computer industry, which includes data storage centres, consumes a lot of power, which is generated using fossil fuels. Already, children are using mobile phones and computers so much.

Paper production uses less power, and paper is the best way to share information. Some people think they save a tree by not using paper, but trees are planted because of paper use.

Finland, which has one of the biggest forestry product industries in the world, has a 70 per cent forest cover. It is time to stop the myth about using and reading paper-based information.
