Unwed mums did make choices that led to their situation

Logically, the argument that most single unwed mothers did not get into this situation by choice does not stand up to scrutiny. In many situations — though not all — there are at least three levels of choice.

Logically, the argument that most single unwed mothers did not get into this situation by choice does not stand up to scrutiny. In many situations — though not all — there are at least three levels of choice.

She chose to have premarital sex with a guy whom she is unsure will marry her; she made a choice not to use birth control; and she made a choice to not give up the baby for adoption to the many couples who would love to have a baby but cannot have one of their own.

All of us are free to make our own choices and should not be judged on those choices. But to appeal and say society is then obliged to help make life easier is a trickier argument to make.
