User-friendly transport system needs better bus stops, routes

I refer to the letter “Make public transport user-friendly for everyone” (Sept 30). The Land Transport Authority should consider constructing better bus stops among those that are used heavily.

I refer to the letter “Make public transport user-friendly for everyone” (Sept 30). The Land Transport Authority should consider constructing better bus stops among those that are used heavily.

One example is the busy bus stop at Blk 298A Punggol Road. The shelter is a distance away from the road, and when it rains, it becomes inconvenient for commuters who are boarding or alighting. There should be a higher bus shelter, like those at MRT stations.

To have a more user-friendly public transport, the whole system should be revised. Some bus routes are not efficient, with too many loops and turns.

Bus stops at interchanges and direct bus services can be more productive and save commuters time, thus creating a better quality life and helping to save money for the operator and commuters too.

Feeder services or other direct services can take commuters to interchange bus stops that come with a higher shelter and other amenities, to transfer to other services. These amenities could generate income to support cheaper fares.

A more streamlined transport system would save on petrol and manpower costs as well as time and land. Public transport is not about making a huge profit; it is infrastructure that helps our economy to flourish.
