I am heartened that the start-up WhyQ — which pools food orders from hawker centres and food courts, and delivers them to offices — decided to make this video series to give credit to Singapore’s hawkers.

Such creative initiatives will help Singaporeans to understand and empathise more with hawkers, or get to know their favourite hawkers better, or open their eyes to the behind-the-scenes work. Many Singaporeans are unaware of the hard work and passion these vendors put into preparing their food.

The video series also acts as a form of publicity to promote hawker food, and this is essential to hawkers who need more business to cover the rising rental costs of their stalls.

The hawker trade risks dying off as more people choose to eat fast food due to its convenience and the comfortable air-conditioned environment of fast-food restaurants.

Hawker food is part of Singapore’s culture, and it is affordable and delicious. Being a hawker is definitely no easy feat. There should be more of such initiatives to highlight the hard work they put in to cook for us.
