Well-designed hawker centres won’t need to be air-conditioned

I refer to the letter “Hawker Centres 3.0 should be air-conditioned” (Feb 22).

Providing a comfortable, sustainable facility and internal climate without air conditioning is possible. It has to do with understanding the functions and then designing the facility to serve them.

In Singapore, I have not seen good designs, maybe owing to the insufficient exposure and life experiences designers have had, or the frequent change of use.

If air conditioning is introduced into hawker centres, I would worry about the impact on food prices and consequences for hygiene.
