What is being done to deter bullying in schools?
The bullying incident at Shuqun Secondary School is indeed cause for concern (“School statements not enough to stop bullying”; Sept 26). This may not have been an isolated case, as others may not have been highlighted or exposed.

What are schools and the Education Ministry doing to prevent this from happening in broad daylight and in the classroom itself? Of greater concern in this case is that the bullying occurred in the presence of an adjunct teacher.
Teachers are supposed to provide guidance and enforce discipline. Yet, no actions were taken to stop the incident. In fact, the bullying was reported to have been going on for some time.
It was reported also that the school suggested transferring the pupil involved to another class. Would this be a solution or an easy way out to cool off the affected parents?
What is to prevent him from doing the same in the next class? What would parents of pupils in that class think regarding their children’s safety? Would the Boys’ Town of yesteryear be a better form of deterrence?
Should surveillance cameras be installed in classrooms, something that childcare centres have implemented? We do not want to see more serious or drastic incidents happening before forceful actions are taken.
