One early morning last week, I picked up a passenger from the taxi stand at the Resorts World Sentosa casino.

The young lady told me frankly that she had no money and that her father would pay for her fare when we reach Toa Payoh.

I was not surprised, as I had encountered three similar incidents in the last two months, but I am struck by the effects casino gambling has. I wonder, foremost, why our youngsters would seek wealth in such an odd, risky way.

Secondly, I wonder how many young adults indulge regularly in casino gambling and whether the relevant authority has such records.

Furthermore, I wonder if vice or even secret society activities related to gambling have increased in the years since the casinos were established here. Last but not least, is family cohesion and bonding being affected?
