Why did AVA take so long to act in Sin Ming?

I refer to the letter “Free-roaming chickens culled for public health reasons, not noise” (Feb 14).

The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority’s recent actions make one wonder whether it has long-term and ongoing programmes to “ensure that Singapore is kept free from associated animal and plant diseases that pose a threat to public health”.

The fact is this: Many of the chickens and red junglefowl have been in Sin Ming Avenue and nearby areas for three years or more. Does the AVA take so long to identify a problem and act on it?

Its letter, tying the culling of these chickens to public health concerns, is alarmist. And it does not say whether it is going to identify what caused the junglefowl to leave the nearby forested areas in the first place.

They should be returned to these places, except that I have seen few of them in the past fortnight.
