Will rise in waste collection fee mean a better service?

As the costs of services continue to rise, the public is generally expected to pay more in order to enjoy the same level of service or better.

As the costs of services continue to rise, the public is generally expected to pay more in order to enjoy the same level of service or better.

Will the fee increase for refuse collection, however, benefit the various households or merely help the companies cover their costs to prevent losses? (“Home refuse-collection fees to go up from next year”; Nov 8)

A 10 per cent increase may be overlooked by some households but would have an impact on those who are not as well-off.

However, the real question is: Would this increase make a difference to the efficiency of refuse collection?

If yes, in what way will the public benefit? If it means a manpower increase to improve service, then the increment has been maximised and households would benefit.

If the answer is no, then the companies must reconsider their decision, from the economic angle and from the public perspective.

In the final analysis, there must at least be a good reason to increase fees, with various benefits that could be projected in order to satisfy the public.
