Workplace safety above all else

I refer to the report “Highest workplace fatality rate since 2009 expected this year” (Aug 25). This issue is not to be taken lightly, as every life should be treasured, regardless of gender, race or nationality.

I refer to the report “Highest workplace fatality rate since 2009 expected this year” (Aug 25). This issue is not to be taken lightly, as every life should be treasured, regardless of gender, race or nationality.

According to the report, out of the 42 deaths between January and June, 18 occurred in the construction sector. Though this number is close to half of all the deaths, it comes as no surprise.

A prominent reason was that safety rules were neglected. The push for productivity may have also diverted attention away from safety. To prevent such cases, workplace safety should resonate stronger.

I have seen posters and signage outside construction sites that remind workers to always observe personal safety while working, and this is good. Other constant reminders that safety is of utmost importance should also be put in place.

In the quest to complete their jobs, workers often forget that safety should be considered above all else.
