SINGAPORE — A worker onboard a vessel docked at Jurong Port Road died after being hit by a bundle of steel bars that were being lifted out of the vessel’s cargo hold.
In a statement to the media on Wednesday (Aug 17) night, a Manpower Ministry spokesperson said the incident happened on Sunday at around 8.40pm.
The vessel was docked at the premises of Jurong Port Pte Ltd.
The bundle of steel bars had swung and hit the worker, who was assisting the lifting operation.
A Stop-Work Order on all lifting operations on board the vessel has since been issued, and the cause of the accident is currently under investigation.
The spokesperson added: “Employers and Contractors are reminded to have a Lifting Plan for use during crane lifting operations. The Lifting Plan needs to indicate the correct lifting methods and the position of lifting equipment, personnel and the load, before and after the lift operation.”
