HARARE — Zimbabwe’s police and the national parks organisation today (Oct 7) say they have arrested five people in connection with the poisoning of 14 elephants in Hwange National Park with cyanide.

Investigations revealed that the elephants were killed using a poison suspected to be cyanide mixed with coarse salt applied at a salt lick.

“All their tusks were removed by poachers,” Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Authority said in an emailed statement yesterday.

Separately, three staff from the park were arrested for stealing ivory, which was later recovered at the airport in the capital, Harare, Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management said in an e-mailed statement.

The staff were an ecologist and two rangers. BLOOMBERG
