Driver who hit toddler starts events that leave four dead

MILWAUKEE — A man shot and killed himself yesterday (April 16), while trying to avoid arrest for allegedly killing two people in an attempt to shoot the driver of van who had accidentally ran over one of his nephews.

Ricky Chiles killed himself four days after the initial shooting as police and federal marshals closed in on him at a motel, where he was staying with his girlfriend.

Chiles was wanted by police after he opened fire on driver Archie Brown Jr who had accidently ran over 2-year-old Damani Terry when he stepped out into the path of the oncoming van.

When the driver stopped to check on the injured toddler, police said, Chiles took the law into his own hands, emerging with a gun. He fired at 40-year-old Brown the driver, striking him, and hitting his other nephew, Rasheed Chiles, 15, who witnesses said was attempting to help when his uncle accidentally shot him.

Brown died at the scene, alongside Damani. Rasheed Chiles died at a hospital.

“This sad example is what we get when we have folks who decide it’s their responsibility to use their guns to redress their grievances,” Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn said yesterday at a news conference.
