KUALA LUMPUR — The circulation of flyers threatening the Chinese from joining Bersih 4 tomorrow (Aug 29) was done to intimidate them, said DAP lawmaker Anthony Loke, who urged the police to take action against the perpetrators.
He said the act was an old tactic to scare the Chinese from joining the 34-hour rally.
“This is clearly an intimidation that if the Chinese join Bersih, they will receive resistance from the Malays. Whoever produced these flyers, they are trying to scare the Chinese from joining Bersih .
“We strongly condemn this act,” he told a press conference at DAP headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today.
A flyer threatening the Chinese, especially those who planned to go for the rally this weekend, was found in front of the DAP headquarters near Pudu and in Penang.
Flyers with the words “Cina Turun Bersih, Sedia Bermandi Darah!” (Chinese going to Bersih, be prepared for bloodbath) were believed to been circulated at the Pudu market this morning.
The Bersih 4 rally planned for tomorrow and Sunday is pressing for institutional reform, the freedom to protest, measures to save the economy and a clean government and political system.
Mr Loke also stressed that Bersih 4, organised by electoral reform watchdog Bersih 2.0, was a gathering for all Malaysians regardless of race.
“We are disappointed that when it comes to this kind of threat, it seems like they don’t investigate. And, now, three Dapsy members have been called to the Kuala Langat police headquarters to give statements just because of distributing flyers promoting Bersih.
“We urge the police to carry out their responsibility professionally.”
Gerakan Harapan Baru chairman Mohamad Sabu who was also at the press conference urged police to carry out their duty without fear or favour during the rally.
He also said its volunteer corps, Amal Relief (Arif), would have around 1,000 volunteers for crowd control.
“Arif will help control the crowd irrespective of race,” he said.
In George Town, where the posters were also found, northeast district police chief ACP Mior Faridalathrash Wahid told reporters that the police were investigating the matter under Section 4(1)(a) of the Sedition Act, as the material had seditious tendencies. THE MALAYSIAN INSIDER
