KUALA LUMPUR — The Chinese in Malaysia gained political power with money earned from vice activities like prostitution and illegal gambling, an UMNO delegate told his party’s 65th annual general assembly today (Nov 28).

The delegate, Mr Mohd Zaidi Mohd Said from Penang, said the Chinese should thank the Malays for their patience, as their inaction had allowed these vice operations to continue.

“We know that the political strength of the Chinese come from dirty businesses like prostitution, illegal gambling.

“Do they know if we actually take action on them then none of their operations will succeed and as such, they will fear a Malay government,” Mr Mohd Zaidi told the assembly.

The Penang delegate was referring to the Chinese community in his home state.

Mr Mohd Zaidi also targeted the constituency of federal Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim, alleging that vice operations run by the Chinese community are rampant there.

As an example, he claimed there was a huge number of heavily-tinted cars in the area, and lamented that the authorities have done nothing to penalise them.

As a safety enforcement rule, heavily-tinted car windows are prohibited in Malaysia.

Continuing, Mr Mohd Zaidi also said the freedom by the Chinese to operate vice dens in the state was an insult to the Malays there.

He suggested that corrupt Malay officers were responsible for allowing such activities to flourish.

“They are allowed to insult us, to ridicule us, all because of the attitude of these officers,” Mr Mohd Zaidi said.

This year’s UMNO AGM has so far seen a steady feat of racially-charged speeches.

Yesterday, party deputy president and Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin claimed that Chinese employers often discriminate against Bumiputera graduates.

On Wednesday, Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin suggested the Chinese community was not holding to their part of the bargain as agreed upon in a social contract between the three major races post-independence.

Earlier this morning, a Perak delegate said the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition should drop efforts to win non-Malay support, claiming the communities have betrayed the government.

Echoing the sentiment, Mr Mohd Zaidi branded the Chinese as disloyal, despite what the government had done for them.

“They would not even sing the Negaraku, don’t expect them to pick up arms and defend the country.

“Only the Malays will die for their country,” he said. THE MALAY MAIL ONLINE
