Haze worsens in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysians woke up to hazier skies this morning (July 23) as air pollutant index (API) levels shot up in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Perak and Terengganu.

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysians woke up to hazier skies this morning (July 23) as air pollutant index (API) levels shot up in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Perak and Terengganu. According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department, visibility had reduced in the Klang Valley yesterday with visibility ranging from 2.5km to 4km in different areas. Port Klang’s API reading has gone up to 105 as at 8am today as the smog moves its way northbound, affecting the capital city. API levels between 0 to 50 are rated as good, 51 to 100 moderate, 101 to 200 unhealthy, 201 to 300 very unhealthy and above 300 hazardous. Bukit Rambai in Malacca and Muar in Johor have an API of 116 and 115, respectively, while the API at Banting is now at 91. The number of hotspots detected in Sumatra is at 252, with 167 in the Riau province. Although the number of hotspots has decreased slightly from 261 recorded over the weekend, the locations of the hotspots are now centred near the coast of Sumatra, 155km from Port Klang. The department has also predicted rainfall this week at several places. Muar, Malacca City, Manjung are expected to see slight rainfalls while Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya, Kuala Selangor, Putrajaya and Port Dickson stays dry.
