HONG KONG — Hong Kong motorists stopped their vehicles to join passers-by in a scramble for cash yesterday (Dec 24) after HK$35 million (S$5.97 milion) fell out the faulty rear door of G4S Plc van, the South China Morning Post reported, citing police and an unidentified spokeswoman from the security company.

Taxi drivers, their passengers and pedestrians can be seen, in footage posted to youtube.com, snatching up the HK$500 notes that spilled on to busy Gloucester Road in Wan Chai on Christmas Eve. Thirteen people returned HK$3.6 million ($464,000), and Hong Kong police have called on the public to help in recovering the rest of the HK$15 million still missing, the newspaper reported.

Bank of China Hong Kong said in a statement today that G4S was contracted to deliver its banknotes and it urged the company to investigate the incident.

“G4S has apologized for the incident and will hold liable to all the losses incurred,” the bank said in the statement.
