NUSAJAYA — Johor should consider imposing a levy on Singapore-registered vehicles entering the state to generate additional revenue, a Johor assemblyman has proposed.
Mr Samsol Bari Jamil, the representative for Semarang, from the ruling Barisan Nasional, said more than 200,000 cars from Singapore entered Johor Baru every day via the Causeway and the Second Link, The Star reported yesterday.
He said, at the first official Johor State Assembly sitting yesterday, that the state government should impose an affordable RM7 (S$2.70) levy on each Singapore-registered car, the newspaper reported.
“They (Singaporeans) will continue coming to Johor even if the state government starts imposing the levy on them,” he said.
He also called on the state government not to focus only on certain districts, but to develop other parts of Johor equally. “Johoreans in the other parts perceive that they have been sidelined by the state government in development,” he was quoted as saying.
Iskandar Malaysia, in southern Johor, was launched in 2006, and the economic region has attracted more than RM6 billion from Singapore firms, according to reports.
