Malacca exco moves to repeal dog ban after thousands signed online petition
KUALA LUMPUR — A Malacca state executive councillor said he will table a motion at the state exco meeting next week to abolish a ban on dogs at terrace houses.
KUALA LUMPUR — A Malacca state executive councillor said he will table a motion at the state exco meeting next week to abolish a ban on dogs at terrace houses.
The Star Online reported State Public Affairs, Human Resources and NGO Affairs committee chairman M S Mahadevan as saying that he will also propose for complaints on pet owners or noisy dogs to be resolved on a case-by-case basis.
“I will table my motion together with the recommendations from animal welfare groups to have the ruling repealed,” he was quoted saying.
Despite the ruling that came into effect in 2013, Mahadevan reportedly said only a few dog licenses were rejected and 3,013 licenses were approved this year.
“I am confident that the chief minister would consider nullifying the ruling if tabled with the supporting facts from animal welfare groups.
“Furthermore, the ruling was proposed before Idris Haron became chief minister,” he was quoted saying.
Malacca Chief Minister Idris Haron reportedly said last Friday (Sept 16) that dog owners living in intermediate terrace homes in the state would be allowed to keep their pets pending discussions with stakeholders, after thousands of people recently signed an online petition against the ban.
