KUALA LUMPUR — The minimum price of cigarettes will be increased from RM7 (S$2.51) to RM9 with effect from August 1, Health Minister Dr S Subramaniam announced today (July 30).

The Star reported that the price will also be increased to RM10 after a year.

Dr Subramaniam reportedly said the decision was agreed to by the steering committee of the World Health Organization (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), which met today.

The committee also agreed to gazette all public parks and public areas in national parks as no-smoking zones, the news portal reported.

Dr Subramaniam was also quoted as saying the implementation of non-smoking areas would be under “educational enforcement” and he hoped it would be fully enforced by January 1 next year. MALAY MAIL ONLINE
