Malaysian grandmother loses three generations of family in highway accident

KUALA LUMPUR — “Please take me too, I don’t want to continue living anymore. My family is destroyed and I am all alone now.”

Such was the despair expressed by a 71-year-old grief-stricken Ng Siew Yin after three generations of her family were wiped out in the gruesome road accident along the North-South Expressway on Sunday (April 2).

The accident that occurred near Tanjung Malim had claimed the lives of her two children, her daughter-in-law and grandchildren, and her husband, 76-year-old Lam Leong Choy.

Police investigations revealed a trailer had lost control and skidded, hitting the highway divider before crushing the multi-purpose vehicle the group was travelling in.

Recounting the hours, Madam Ng said she was at an altar reciting prayers and had no information of their possible disappearance.

Anxiety seeped in after the phones of the deceased were uncontactable as frantic family members began calling after the group failed to turn up at Bidor, Perak.

The group departed at about 6am and was expected to arrive two hours later.

The family only knew what happened after an unknown individual answered the mobile phone at about 11am.

A tow truck foreman had informed the family of their deaths and asked them to visit the police station.

Asked if the family will take action against the driver, Madam Ng said she was still coming to terms with the tragedy.

“I don’t know what to do. I’m lost and I’m helpless,” she said.

Despite the sombre mood, other family members were vocal against the recklessness displayed by the lorry driver involved.

Mr Pang Ming Bang, 43, the adopted brother of one of the victims, Lam Wait Keat, said the driver must be punished for his actions and be accounted for.

“He has harmed this family in ways unimaginable and justice must be served,” he said.

“Do you know how pitiful their death was? It’s unacceptable for all of us,” she said in tears.

The bodies of the deceased will be cremated after the wake service tomorrow.

Deputy Education Minister and MCA Youth chairman Chong Sin Woon arrived at 4.45pm to pay his respects to the family.

Mr Chong said Nirvana Memorial Centre has agreed to bear the cost of the bereavement services at the request of the family.

“MCA will provide assistance to the family. Hopefully, this will alleviate the family’s burden in these trying times,” he said.

It was understood that one of the deceased, Wai Loon, was a former MCA Youth deputy chairman for the Serdang division.

Mr Chong also called for a thorough investigation into the matter with the necessary action taken by the authorities. MALAY MAIL ONLINE
