KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia’s crime index has shown a gradual decrease between 2010 and 2016, recording a total of 47 per cent reduction in criminal activities in the country, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.

In the National Transformation Programme Annual Report 2016 released on Tuesday (May 23), Mr Ahmad Zahid who is also home minister said that the Perception of Crime Indicator also showed that residents of Kuala Lumpur were now less afraid of becoming victims of crime.

“Between the year 2010 to 2016, our Index Crime decreased at an average of 9 per cent annually to record a total reduction of 47 per cent.

In 2016, the reduction registered a lower decrease rate of 2.8 per cent,” he said.

He said that the figure suggests that while the number of people filing crime reports has increased, it does not mean “that there is an increase in the number of crime incidents”.

“The Perception of Crime Indicator (PCI) introduced in 2015 recorded a reduction in the people of Kuala Lumpur’s fear of becoming a victim of crime, signalling that the rakyat do feel safer,” he added.

Mr Ahmad Zahid said that from a previous 80 per cent in 2015, the indicator reduced to 61 per cent, reflecting a marked improvement in the government’s effort to address the public’s pressing concerns on crime.

The crime index is used to measure the volume of crime in a given area, and comprises acts such as property theft and violent crime. It does not cover commercial crime, drug-related business crime and cyber crime.

The PCI meanwhile is used as an indicator to measure the public’s feeling and sentiments towards the happenings of criminal activities.

The minister added that the Royal Malaysian Police also aims to become a world-class and service-oriented force come the year 2020, by using technology to improve efficacy and productivity.

The NTP was launched in 2010, comprising the Economic Transformation Programme and the Government Transformation Programme, to improve the government’s delivery system and to drive Malaysia towards high-income status by 2020. THE MALAY MAIL ONLINE
