KUALA LUMPUR — The challenges now facing the country made it an inopportune time to change its leadership, Mr Najib Razak said today (May 23).

Saying that any administration will have its issues, the prime minister said it was important that he be given a chance to continue with his agenda to improve the nation, according to a report by The Star.

“This is not the time to ask people to step down from their post but a time to unite because of the challenges ahead,” he was quoted as saying in Gopeng.

“We are all humans, which is why I am asking for the chance for us to continue our fight as well as serve the people.”

Mr Najib is facing calls for his resignation from former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who said that the former’s handling of issues such as 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) and the 2006 murder of Altantuya Shaariibuu would cost Umno and Barisan Nasional power in the next general election.
