Once the rising star of the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition’s largest party, the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim’s 16-year saga in and out of courts for sodomy charges has kept Malaysia on a political edge and shone the international spotlight on the country. His final appeal was dismissed today (Feb 10). Anwar now faces a five-year jail term, following his conviction for sodomising with his former aide. Here are some of the key events leading up to the appeal hearing:
