PETALING JAYA — Malaysians are generally unaware of the key focus areas of the 11th Malaysia Plan (11MP) and lack the enthusiasm to find out more unless they are shown results, a Malay Mail survey revealed yesterday (May 24).

Most of them had not watched Prime Minister Najib Razak’s speech on Thursday nor could they clearly describe what Vision 2020 was about.

The 11MP, themed Anchoring Growth on People, was tabled in Parliament to help Malaysians prepare for developed nation status by 2020.

Here’s what they said:

Ms Ariana Ismail, 23, a freelancer unable to describe what Vision 2020 or 11MP was about, said: “I know a bit on green development and it is good they are making this a key focus area. I will make an effort to find out more about both Vision 2020 and 11MP.”

Part-time student Amir Afiq, 24, said: “I think we need a few more leaps apart from 11MP to reach Vision 2020. I don’t really see changes so it didn’t catch my interest.”

Mr Ronald Lim, 52, a manager, said: “I contribute by working hard and paying taxes. If I see results then I will pay more attention because that is real progress.”

Ms Kiki Lee, 22, a student, was aware of the announcement but missed the speech.

She lauded plans to build more schools, hospitals and expansion of the rail network but wanted to see changes and results with her own eyes

Ms Nur Fatin Ezzaty, 21, a marketing officer who missed the speech, said not much had been done to provide a better understanding of Vision 2020 and 11MP.

“I was having breakfast when I heard they will finally improve broadband network. I don’t know how much progress has been made, but if I don’t see changes soon it will affect how I vote.”

Homemaker Fara Azmi, 50, said she did not feel any connection with Vision 2020 or 11MP. “I was paying my car insurance and I don’t have time to sit down for speeches. I believe dealing with rising costs and political issues is more important,” she said.

Mr Rosli Mohd Yusof, a 75-year-old retiree, said that on paper, it was a good plan. He added that while the objectives were noble, it was still up to the government to produce actual results.

Insurance agent K Uthayakumaran, 56, said: “The plan should benefit all levels of society, not just a select few. There is lack of transparency when it comes to government spending.” THE MALAY MAIL ONLINE
