TAIPEI — Flights and trains in Taiwan were disrupted by the approach of Typhoon Megi this month, and most cities planned work and school closures for Tuesday (Sept 27).

The island’s financial markets were also shut, financial regulators said.

Typhoon Megi is expected to make landfall in eastern Taiwan later Tuesday but is already bringing widespread violent winds and torrential rain as it nears the island.

According to government figures, 20 injuries have been reported so far.

More than 5,000 people have been evacuated from their homes and around 2,000 are in shelters, according to the Central Emergency Operation Center.  About 36,000 households have lost power due to the typhoon so far.

A total of 575 international and domestic flights were cancelled as of Tuesday morning, and 109 delayed. Most trains were also halted.

EVA Airways, one of Taiwan’s main international airlines, said it was cancelling or rescheduling some international flights.

Cathay Pacific Airways cancelled 19 Taiwan flights scheduled for Sept 27-28. The island’s largest carrier China Airlines said on Tuesday night that flights were cancelled or delayed.

High speed rail service was suspended all day on Tuesday.

Television footage showed powerful waves surging past breakwaters in northeastern Yilan county and outlying Orchid Island.

Ahead of the storm, more than 3,700 tourists had already been evacuated at the weekend from Orchid Island and Green Island -- both popular with visitors.

In mainland China, the meteorological administration raised the level of its emergency response readiness and forecast Megi to make landfall on the coast of Fujian province Thursday morning. AGENCIES
