SYDNEY — An Australian man has appeared in court on terror charges after police say he tried to join Kurdish-aligned forces in their fight against the Islamic State group in Iraq.

Police say Jamie Williams was stopped by customs agents at Melbourne airport in December en route to Qatar after military-style equipment and clothing were found in his luggage. He was charged with making preparations for incursions into a foreign country for the purpose of engaging in hostile activities.

Williams appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court today (July 28). He did not apply for bail and was remanded to custody until his next court appearance in October. If convicted, he faces a maximum punishment of life in prison. AP
