SINGAPORE — The Munich shooting was a "senseless" and "brutal" act of violence, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on Facebook on Saturday (July 23).

In a condolence letter to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, PM Lee also expressed his shock over the incident and offered Singapore's best wishes to those injured.

"On behalf of the Government of Singapore, I offer our deepest condolences to the bereaved families.  We condemn this senseless act of violence.  Our thoughts are with the people of Germany," PM Lee wrote.

The PM's letter came after a gunman shot and killed nine people at a shopping centre in the southern German city on Friday.

There were no immediate reports of Singaporeans injured or directly affected by the deadly shooting incident, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said in a statement on Saturday morning.

MFA said it had verified the safety of most Singaporeans registered in Munich, while it was continuing its efforts to contact the remaining registered Singaporeans.

The ministry also urged any unregistered Singaporeans in Munich to contact their loved ones to let them know they are safe.

On Facebook, PM Lee also said that the world is "at risk of becoming numbed" by "so many brutal terrorist attacks in recent attacks, one after another".

We "have to remind ourselves of the terrible human tragedy each time", he said.

Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan also posted his condolences and reminded Singaporeans in Munich to let their families know they are unharmed.

MFA advised any Singapore nationals in Munich to be vigilant and monitor the local news for updates.
