BERLIN — A German hospital said a 65-year-old man who survived the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome but was left weakened has died of a lung infection.

Mr Michael Schiffbaenker, a spokesman for the Niels-Stensen group of hospitals, said today (June 16) the man died earlier this month in a facility in Lower Saxony. He said the hospital had agreed with the family not to release details of the fatal infection but said the MERS virus had left his body weakened.

Mr Schiffbaenker said no one with contact with the man has tested positive for MERS.

Authorities said the man appears to have caught MERS in February during a trip to Abu Dhabi.

Of two other MERS reported cases in Germany, both contracted abroad, one person died and the other survived, according to European health authorities. AP
