WARSAW — A toddler discovered unconscious in sub-freezing temperatures in southern Poland is reacting to commands and reaching for toys after only four days of treatment, a doctor said today (Dec 4), calling the boy’s recovery a “miracle”.

Dr Janusz Skalski, a heart surgeon at the children’s hospital in Krakow, said the boy will still need rehabilitation to help restore his full physical and intellectual powers but that his quick recovery has surprised everyone.

Hospital spokeswoman Magdalena Oberc said the child’s temperature was only 12.7°C when hospital treatment began early Sunday — that’s compared to a normal temperature of 36-38°C, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Ms Oberc identified the boy as Adam, aged 2 years and 4 months, and said it appeared that he had spent a number of hours outdoors after going missing from his grandmother’s house in Raclawice, near Krakow.

Nurse Wioletta Dyrcz told TVN24 that Adam said “yes” when asked if he wanted breakfast and had cottage cheese with tea.

“He breathes on his own, moves his head, follows us with his eyes and smiles,” Ms Dyrcz said. “He’s playing with cars and watching children’s videos.” AP
