JOHOR BARU — Part of the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) areas at the busy Sultan Iskandar CIQ complex in Johor Baru will undergo a redesign to ensure better traffic flow on weekends.

Johor Public Works, Rural and Regional Development Committee chairman Hasni Mohammad said the checking lanes at the import lorry complex there will be redesigned to accommodate private car use on Saturday and Sunday.

“There are six lanes at the CIQ’s import lorry complex that can be used for this purpose. The lanes should be used up to its maximisation as there are fewer lorries using the CIQ on both days,” he told the media after inspecting the facilities at the CIQ area on Sunday (Feb 4).

Mr Hasni added that there will also be some alteration to the speed humps and barriers at the lanes to help ease traffic flow.

He said it would take time for the changes to take place due to the coordination involving 22 agencies that come under the CIQ.

Mr Hasni, who is also the state lawmaker for Benut, said about 145,000 vehicles use the CIQ on a daily basis.

“Due to that, the authorities need to find solutions before the Johor Baru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) project starts,” he said.

The CIQ area here, which connects directly to Singapore via the Johor Causeway, is notorious for long and time-consuming traffic queues and congestion on weekends starting from Friday evening to Sunday night.

The Sultan Iskandar’s CIQ complex is one of the two land routes in Johor that connect to Singapore.

The RTS is expected to be operational in December 2024. THE MALAY MAIL ONLINE
