KUALA LUMPUR — A Malaysian teenage boy and his girlfriend were detained on Monday night (Dec 11) for allegedly selling their twin babies online.

"The 20-year-old woman was detained at her house in Setapak around 8pm while her boyfriend, who was two years younger, was nabbed an hour later at his house in Ampang," said city police chief Mazlan Lazim

"The suspects were believed to have advertised their four-months-old twins for RM15,000 (S$4.974) on a website on Friday," he said when contacted on Tuesday (Dec 12).

Mr Mazlan Lazim said the couple were held at different locations, and had been released on police bail.

"The babies have been handed over to the Social Welfare Department," he added, adding the case was being investigated under Section 48 of the Child Act 2001.

The arrests came after an advertisement attached with a photo of a pair of twins with the title "twins to let go" was uploaded on a popular online website last Friday.

The ad went viral on other social media platforms and Whatsapp.
